Portrait of a

Male American

KESTREL

12″ x 12″
Egg Tempera on Panel

The American Kestrel is the smallest falcon in the Americas. The male is beautifully colored with slate-blue head and wings offset by rusty-red shoulders and tail. Packed into their small frame is a lot of attitude. They are ferocious and feisty hunters that feed on insects and small mammals. This beautiful male was hunting near the Sacramento River in California.

I use my own photographs as reference images for my subjects.
