Northern Harriers have facial discs (similar to owls) which direct sound waves to their ears. Exquisite flyers they listen for prey as they soar just a few feet from the ground. This young female was taking a moment’s rest from nest building in a field alongside the Sacramento River in California.

I use my own photographs as reference images for my subjects.
